Drosophila Chambers
Drosophila, more commonly known as fruit flies, are frequently employed in a wide range of scientific experiments. To keep your studies going, it’s important to cultivate a lasting and sustainable population of these insect, however. At Geneva Scientific, we offer a range of drosophila chambers from Percival Scientific that help your lab keep up with your needs and demands.
Efficient Design
Drosophila chambers are available in a variety of styles and size configurations to meet your needs, but each features a number of energy-efficient design features. Externally, 24-gauge smooth white galvanized steel creates a sleek and durable design, while interior 26-gauge side walls backed with 2-inch thick walls ensure heat and humidity maintenance inside the unit. Non-CFC Urethane insulation is foamed in place, as well, further enhancing temperature retention.
Access to the chamber is provided by a single door – measuring 29.2 inches by 57.5 inches – which seals with a magnetic gasket to ensure a tight, even seal to the unit when closed. Inside, five to six epoxy-coated steel wire shelves provide an abundance of space to allow plant growth up to 9.5 inches. Shelves can be individually adjusted using the shelf clips by half an inch.
The chambers also include optional 1.25-inch diameter port access, a floor drain with included hose assembly, and adjustable leveling legs that allow the unit’s height to adjust to ensure level footing on uneven lab floors.
Environmental Controls
Temperature inside the unit can be maintained from 4 degrees C to 44 degrees C with humidity control, depending on lighting use and temperature setting. Managed by Percival’s IntellusUltra controller, the drosophila chamber also allows users to set adjustable high and low temperature limits, with visual indicators and audible alarms programmed to alert staff if conditions are exceeded. The unit can also be powered down automatically and trigger alarms in the event conditions inside fall out of THE acceptable range.
Creating a high humidity environment helps promote the rearing of drosophila, but temperature conditions must also be maintained to ensure optimal growth. To achieve that goal, each chamber includes a self-contained, air-cooled condensing unit that ensures temperature control inside the unit regardless of conditions in the lab. The efficient design of the condenser allows for continuous operation using an alternating refrigerant and hot gas to coil cycle. This helps extend the overall useful life of the compressor while simultaneously reducing the risk of ice buildup.
Mounted at the top of the unit, the refrigeration system is easy to clean and maintain, and allows for heat to easily dissipate out into the room instead of building inside the chamber. Air is circulated inside with twin fans. Finally, the refrigeration coil is designed to stand up to potentially acidic environments – common with drosophila rearing – using a phenolic coating that helps ensure long-lasting resilience.
Additional Features
Drosophila chambers are available with and without lighting fixtures. Units with lighting offer fluorescent lamps that are mounted vertically at the side of each shelf, delivering 75-80 μmoles/m2/s of light irradiance measured at 6 inches, with intensity programmable via the IntellusUltra system. In all units, two 115/1/60 convenience receptacles provide electrical access to add additional lighting or other fixtures as needed. The unit also has a half-inch MPT connector fitting to accept demineralized water for the maintenance of humidity inside the unit.
